Need ideas for your spring pots? Wondering where to start for a lush planter? Here are three easy planter recipes and my thoughts on what makes a great spring container garden!
I’ll admit that Spring can be hard for pots. The plants are little, and there isn’t much that is tall. But you can still have lush pots! How? Let’s look at the elements of a container garden. While many people think of planters as having thrillers, spillers, and fillers, I prefer HEIGHT, HEAVY HITTERS, and HELPERS. I think it is a more accurate description of what you actually need and the functions each element fulfills. I make sure to include each element in my containers. Here is how it plays out in a spring pot:
Next, let’s look at three planter ‘recipes’. Each has a list of the plants that are used and which purpose (height, heavy hitter, or helper) they accomplish. You can mix up the colors as you want. Smaller containers - use less plants. Bigger containers - try for larger plants and/or more. Have fun with it!
Here’s Spring Recipe number 1 - a fun corally pink container!
Next up - a classic spring color theme or pinks, blues and yellows.
And for the blue lovers, a blue, yellow, and white planter!
When to start? Look at the nighttime temps. When they are above freezing (or better yet in the upper 30’s - lower 40’s) you can start planting these cool tolerant plants. Also, as spring plants are often small I add lots of plants to the pots so that they are full and lush.
